MUST Hosts Media Orientation Day on Underwater Cultural Heritage in Collaboration with UNESCO and Alexandria University

In line with its dedication to preserving Egypt’s cultural heritage and elevating public awareness, Misr University for Science and Technology (MUST) hosted a specialized “Media Orientation Day on Underwater Cultural Heritage.”

The event was organized by the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector alongside the Cultural Heritage Support Center at MUST, in strategic partnership with the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO and the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage at Alexandria University

Held in alignment with global preparations for the International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage, the event emphasized the strategic importance of submerged antiquities and underscored Egypt’s commitment to the guidelines of the 2001 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

The symposium gathered prominent academic and ministerial leadership, led by Prof. Dr. Hala El-Menoufy, President of MUST; Prof. Dr. Ayman Farid, Assistant Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and General Supervisor of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO; Prof. Dr. Emad Khalil, MUST Vice President for Community Service and UNESCO Chairholder on Underwater Cultural Heritage; and Prof. Dr. Abeer Enany, Executive Director of the Cultural Heritage Support Center, alongside key researchers and domain experts.

Designed to address recent media inaccuracies regarding major marine discoveries in Alexandria,

The agenda covered key thematic areas, including the nature and legal protections of submerged heritage under the UNESCO 2001 framework, modern scientific methodologies for underwater archaeological research, public accessibility of maritime sites, and open interactive sessions between journalists and researchers. The event concluded with a joint pledge to maintain continuous collaboration between academic institutions and media channels to safeguard Egypt’s underwater national legacy.
